Atlantium’s Hydro-Optic Disinfection™ systems enable drinking water suppliers to meet today's tighter regulations and make the move towards environmentally-friendly, safe disinfection. The Hydro-Optic Disinfection system is validated and meets the strict standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for inactivation of microorganisms, parasites as well as viruses at a 4-log reduction level. This makes Atlantium’s pre-approved UV disinfection system the right disinfection choice for water suppliers.

Disinfecting drinking water
Worldwide, government regulators as well as ordinary citizens understand the importance of reducing the levels of chemicals and their by-products in drinking water.  Indeed, although chlorine has traditionally been used as the sole method for disinfecting water, disinfection by-product concerns have spurred more drinking water suppliers to add ultraviolet (UV) light for disinfection. Its increasing popularity is bolstered by regulatory requirements to treat for two chlorine-resistant parasites of concern to regulators and water suppliers, Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Disinfection of viruses using UV would provide a complete disinfection solution and this crucial capability has been recently demonstrated.

Advantages of Atlantium’s system for drinking water suppliers
Atlantium’s systems achieve high levels of microbial disinfection. The key to its effectiveness is the uniform distribution of UV dose  throughout all the water in the system’s disinfection chamber. This ensures that all microbes are exposed to the required UV dose and are effectively inactivated. In addition, the system can deliver a wide range of UV doses including very high doses when required to target specific, highly-resistant microorganisms. Because the system’s dose delivery is so uniform and operationally reliable, the safety factors required are low and the system can be granted disinfection credits for about half the dose required by a standard European validation.

Monitoring and Control. Of vital significance to both regulators and operators is the Hydro-Optic Disinfection system’s two-sensors-per-UV-lamp setup which continuously measures both lamp intensity and water’s UV transmissivity. Real-time data from these sensors, as well as real-time flow rate data from an external flow meter, constantly update the Monitoring and Control program. The real-time display of key parameters (dose, UV transmissivity, flow rate, lamp intensity) on the Monitoring and Control’s screen is extremely helpful to system operators. It facilitates immediate understanding of the situation at any point during operation and simplifies troubleshooting and diagnosis, if necessary. Unique also to Atlantium’s system, the screen shows the actual UV dose currently being delivered based on a validated algorithm, including the safety factors required by the EPA.

Energy savings. Monitoring and Control ensure that water continuously receives the UV dose required for inactivation of target microorganisms by triggering automatic UV lamp adjustments in response to changes in the measured parameters. This important built-in capability helps water suppliers avoid wasteful and unnecessary energy use while still delivering the required disinfection dose.

Required reporting features. Maintaining the required dose assures suppliers that they stay in compliance with their health department and operating regulations. The component’s logging and reporting features produce the required regulatory compliance reports.

Disinfection of viruses at 4-log reduction
The EPA has determined that in order to obtain credit for virus disinfection, UV systems must reach 4 log inactivation of Adenovirus, the pathogenic virus most resistant to UV, which can lead to bronchitis, pneumonia and intestinal infections - to which children and the immune-compromised are particularly susceptible.

In November 2007, Atlantium demonstrated that its Hydro-Optic Disinfection system effectively inactivates Adenovirus at a 4-log reduction level. This achievement opens the way for suppliers of both surface and ground water to choose an environmentally-friendly disinfection method that truly provides high quality, safe water without creation of any disinfection by-products.

Drinking water suppliers using Atlantium’s Hydro-Optic Disinfection system see measurable results:

  • Disinfects target microorganisms at regulation-required levels – achieved through environmentally-friendly means
  • Reduces disinfection by-products – leads to safer water
  • Saves significantly on costs with:
    • reduced chemical use
    • efficient energy use
    • reduced pipe corrosion
  • Simple operation and lower maintenance leads to more productive use of manpower
